ZAMBIA SUGAR continues to improve the lives of the community through its active corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes. Among other things it has purchased pumps for the Mazabuka Prison, which had been experiencing problems with water supply. In addition, employees spearheading voluntary work in the community decided to carry out an electrical rehabilitation exercise to back up Zambia Sugar’s CSR support. The prison caters for 350 prisoners. The company’s electrical section carried out an electrical rehabilitation project at the prison, the electrical problems there being another hurdle the prison had not been able to tackle on its own. The work involved upgrading the electrical system from single to three phase, putting in new security lights, removing old switches and replacing with new ones, and repairing and commissioning the electric pot (which had not been working from 2009 when it was donated by Mazabuka Hospital). The same group also donated cleaning materials to the prison, with a handover ceremony on 8 February where the Mazabuka District Commissioner, Eugene Munyama, was guest of honour.
