BARRIE SKINNER, an electrical engineer in Illovo’s Technical Services at Head Office, attended a National Skill Shortage meeting for Natal in December 2013 where there was a request to business to take in additional SETA*- paid students. Illovo agreed to take on three additional students, who have salaries paid by the electrical SETA but work in Illovo. They have been assigned to Barry, who will guide their progress, in line with the company’s corporate social responsibility. The three are Mxolisi Phenyane, Thobani Mthembu and Thabisile Swelindawo, who have completed their S4 studies at the DUT (Durban University of Technology) and required practical training before they could be awarded their diplomas. When asked to assist, it was arranged Barrie would look after the three for six months. Barrie comments: “The SETA pays them a stipend; all we do is provide the practical. Without the practical they can never qualify and never form part of the skilled people SA so desperately needs.” Since the beginning of the year he has involved them in a number of assignments, as pictured. *SETA = Sector Education and Training Authority

ASSIGNED to wire up a starter for the Nchalo central factory motor control assembly which was being built by Panel Technique, the trainees display the panels they wired up. These are D.O.L. (Direct On Line). “Surprisingly, they all worked first time,” Barrie quipped.

THE SETA students accompanied Barrie to Umzimkulu for the day when he went down for a meeting and took them with him. They were hosted by the electrical foreman Raymond Moodley. They looked at the MV power distribution and assisted in the bearing replacement on a large motor.

FEB 11, 2014 found the students witnessing the pre-tanking tests on a 750kVA transformer for Noodsberg.

FEB 19, 2014 and the SETA students get a run-down on features offered by a motor supplier.
