64 pupils of standard 3A of Kanjedza Primary School are no longer learning while sitting on a cold floor following a donation of 32 double-seater desks from Illovo Malawi.

Illovo Malawi finance director Shaun Robert handed over the desks to a representative of the District Education Manager McArthur Khumbanyiwa on 21 March. The ceremony was also attended by the wife of the Member of Parliament for Blantyre City East, Mrs Ndaona Bande, chairperson of the school management committee, teachers and learners.

Shaun said Illovo had made the donation as part of its social responsibility projects in surrounding communities because “we recognise the importance of education institutions as they provide a solution to the skill needs of the company and the country”, while Kanjedza School Head Mrs Angela Akimu said the desks have improved the performance of pupils at the school. Illovo has been donating desks to the school since 2010. There were only nine desks when Illovo started donating desks to the school, which has 815 learners. Now there are only four classes remaining without desks and Illovo has committed to completely furnishing the remaining classes with desks.
