NO.1 Montgomery Drive in Mount Edgecombe has been home to Illovo Sugar for the past 16 years, after what was considered to be a big move from Eagle Building in the centre of Durban in 1999. Since then, with the focus on centralising group services to reduce costs, the staff complement has grown from about 167 to more than 300 headcount in 2015 (Illovo Sugar Ltd and Illovo SA combined). The original lease was for five years, with two options to extend it for further periods of five years each, which we subsequently exercised. As the lease drew close to the end, options were explored, including extending the lease further. A situational analysis revealed that staying at the current building was no longer a viable option and the decision was taken that Illovo Sugar should invest in building its own Head Office.

Illovo Sugar Limited (ISL) and Illovo Sugar South Africa (ISSA) will move to No 26 Ncondo Place on Umhlanga Ridge in January 2016. As the business is growing, we are continually adopting and exploring models and operating ways that address the gaps and optimise excellence; one of the ways to maximise use of our resources is to have both ISL and ISSA in the same building.

Our new head office is a four-level modern structure building, environmentally friendly with facilities that encourage collaboration. The internal design and layout is largely open plan, with several meeting rooms and boardrooms to accommodate our day-to-day ways of working. Provision has also been made for visiting employees from across the group and from our partners with ‘hot-desk’ workstations, whereby they will have functional workspace.

Construction is well advanced, the scheduled date for completion is 6 November 2015. With all systems in place, Illovo Sugar’s “Big Move” will take place on 4 January 2016. What a way to end and start a new year!

Our new building goes up (May 2015).

The outlook to the Indian Ocean.
