"THE Ubombo team has shown commendable commitment to using continuous improvement (CI)"

THE Ubombo team has shown commendable commitment to using continuous improvement (CI) to improve operational efficiency by actively participating in identifying “quick wins”. The team has reported more than 80 quick wins since the initiative was started more than eight months ago. The quick wins are published monthly and shared with all employees.

Two of the quick wins are described here.

Increasing canefield growing area (Pictured)
A special in-house designed implement reduces cane row spacing from 1,8 to 0,5 m. The open gap, which was previously not planted, is now planted with two extra cane rows, hence increasing the cane growing area.

Reducing shredder chokes
Samkelo Lukhele and his colleagues display an old skirting board that was removed from the D3 conveyor (pictured). With this board, the angle iron support would break and fail at the welding points, resulting in chokes at the shredder. The chokes would take more than 3 hours to clear. The team changed the angle iron from mild steel to stainless steel and replaced the welding with bolts to prevent failure of the mounting.
