(3) SENSITISATION CAMPAIGNS

AS part of a safety initiative Maragra Sugar Mill, the haulage services company Unitrans and Maciana Community headquarters together undertook a community sensitisation campaign to highlight the danger of chasing tractors and trucks that transport sugar cane to the mill. This is done by children and in some cases by adults, with the purpose of removing cane from these cane haulage vehicles while on the move, a dangerous practice that can prove fatal.

In order to eradicate this behaviour, presentations have been held at primary schools that surround the mill, namely Maragra, Eduardo Mandlane, Maciana and Cambeve Primary Schools, which combined have about 6 500 students. The campaign consists of the display of a video which shows the danger of chasing cane haulage vehicles, complemented by an appeal to the audience not to follow the same path.

A schedule has been drawn up for the continuation of sensitisation campaigns in the residential areas of Maciana, Munguine, Manchiana and other places where sugar cane is grown for delivery to Maragra mill.
