Illovo’s farming practices are based on field conservation guidelines advocated by the South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI). These practices ensure agricultural production on a sustainable basis with minimum impact on the environment. This includes careful land use planning, the systematic removal of alien vegetation, the conservation of soil and water and the protection of existing environmental features such as rivers, wetlands and catchment areas.
Illovo follows local legislation and international environmental best practices. It applies standards such as NOSA and ISO14001, and all new developments undergo a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment. Illovo has adopted sustainable farming guidelines based on those of the South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI), and is working to ensure compliance across all of its operations.
